Drs. prescribe statins for people to lower their cholesterol to reduce their risk for heart attack or stroke. While they can be effective, they also have the possibility of unwanted side effects. Among the list of side effects include muscle tiredness, weakness, or pain, digestive problems, mental fuzziness and possibly liver damage. I have had clients who have been on statins and complain of these issues. It is also possible your blood sugar may increase when you take a statin, which may cause the development of type II diabetes…I’m sure you must know you don’t want to end u... Read More...

If we would take seriously that food is information to the body maybe we would work on sending better messages. I recently offered Part One of a class I called Vitamins A-Z about what your body needs. I will be sharing this class with you over my next several blogs. I started with the fact that your body cannot make vitamin A, it must come from your diet. There are 2 types of vitamin A, the first is classified as preformed and is found in meat, poultry, fish, and dairy products. The second type is pro-vitamin A and is found in fruits, vegetables, and other plant based products. I am not going ... Read More...

Hello again, I hope you have been reading and taking notes from this series of “Grab and Go” foods. My goal is to help you see that making healthy food choices can be as fast and easy as grabbing packaged goods. It all starts with a change of information. I want to help, so take a few minutes each week to read the blog, as it could really benefit you.

Let’s talk about anti inflammatory foods like the ones listed below. (Be sure to include these on your next grocery list and be prepared for the week ahead.) We need foods that have fiber, antioxidants (I talked about the... Read More...

You have probably heard about antioxidants before, or maybe not? The prefix anti means against, and oxidation is what antioxidants are against. What is oxidation? I will explain it as best I can.  Oxidation is a chemical reaction where electrons are transferred from one molecule to another, and that is as scientific as I’m going to get about the subject! That in itself is not always bad, but in the body when that happens with free radicals things can become unstable (unhealthy). I’m not going to try to give you a whole scary lesson because all of these processes are natural and ha... Read More...

I’m all about making life simple when it comes to eating. That does not fit everyone’s style, but if that is you then you are going to like my grab and go series that I’m working on to give you ideas for quick meals or snacks when you are on the run. You have probably already heard that bananas come conveniently packed in their own skin ready to take in a hurry. If you spend a few minutes of your time you can have “to go” size snacks of raw nuts that are so healthy. Nuts are very good for you but they are high in healthy fat, but too much fat, well you know where ... Read More...

Osteoporosis is a very real concern for many women especially past menopause. I know none of us want to end up with broken hips or any other broken bones for that matter. We need several things to have strong bones. From the nutritional perspective we need calcium and vitamin D. Most of us know where we can get that, but how about boron. Boron activates vitamins and minerals necessary for the formation of healthy bones. You need between 3 and 5 mg of boron a day to help treat osteoporosis. Let’s just prevent it by adding an apple, or some grapes, nuts, peaches, or pears. Any one of these... Read More...

We are so busy all the time, aren’t we! So many obligations and time constraints that we don’t often have the time to prepare our meals. I will be talking about things we can “Grab and Go” in my next several blogs.

Today let’s talk apples. When I was young there was a saying, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.”  I really believed that to be true. I don’t hear that much anymore, but to generalize, the value it refers to is this: if we would eat more fresh, raw food it may actually help us stay healthy. You know that my philosophy is an... I have read that getting fit is one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions, if not the most popular. I don’t know if it is still a “thing” to join a gym in January because you want to start the year off on the right foot, only to have those best intentions – for many solid reasons – fail. Is getting fit one of your resolutions this year?  If it isn’t, maybe you’re already an exercise enthusiast, and I applaud you. Or perhaps you felt like you have “been there, done that” and don’t ... Head, shoulders, knees and toes, eyes and ears and mouth and nose… as the song goes, but we are missing some important things, and that is the topic of my upcoming presentation on vitamins and minerals, starting with A-C.

Are you aware that every function of the body is unique and requires fuel. Vitamins have different jobs like resisting infections, keeping nerves healthy and giving you energy and so much more.

The number one fuel source for these nutrients will be found in foods, hopefully the foods you are choosing!

Most of us Americans grew up eating burgers and fries whether made at home or bought from a fast-food variety and many of us still love a good burger. In the ’80s much of the facts you heard about nutrition were that fat was bad and carbs were good because they had no fat! What! Now, look at the mess we are in! Since I am not a registered dietician or a certified nutritionist I have to speak off the record and from observation if you want to go crazy read all the “expert” opinions about food.

I’m all about logical and practical, I am a creationist and I believe G... Read More...
